- Staff use machines interchangeably
- Users travel and work from multiple locations
- Providing staff with the quick logon times and reliable performance they need from critical, clinical applications
Knowing this, the IT team at El Camino made providing a secure, consistent and reliable desktop experience a primary objective of their VDI project.
“First and foremost it was about significantly rethinking and improving the care provider experience,” said James Brummett, the Technical Director at El Camino Hospital. “Centralizing our desktop delivery also allowed us to securely manage company data from within the data center and ensure adherence to standards.”
Kovarus, a leading systems integrator assisting in the hospital’s VDI project, recommended AppSense Environment Manager to complement El Camino’s deployment of VMware Horizon View. In partnering with AppSense, the organization’s IT team was able to centralize the security and delivery of desktops while maintaining the personalization of each user.
“With Environment Manager, staff get that ‘new computer smell’ every morning,” said James. “We can ensure applications are secure and up-to-date on the back end, but the user experience, and icons stay exactly the same. Even after we’ve performed a global update, when a user logs in, any personalization they’ve done to their desktop is right as they had left it.”
The team also knew that to guarantee the success of their VDI project they needed logon optimization and control application variables based on location. Environment Manager helped reduce El Camino’s Windows logon times from one minute and thirty seconds to twenty seconds on average – an improvement of 78%.
Additionally AppSense gave IT the ability to enforce application variables based on location, particularly print settings. The hospital can ensure that even as staff moves, from floor to floor or building to building, documents print at the nearest printer rather than the last used, protecting confidential patient information from printing elsewhere.
Aside from the benefits for the end user, El Camino saw significant IT savings. “From an admin perspective, Environment Manager has dramatically reduced the complexity of our virtualization project,” said Greg. He also commented that, with AppSense, “El Camino has been able to reduce the number of images and pools we maintain, and the need for custom scripting to support policy configuration has declined 75%.” In particular, he reports tremendous ease of use in setting and configuring policies.
“AppSense Environment Manager really drove the success of our VDI program,” said Greg Lubben, Desktop Engineer at El Camino Hospital, “we didn’t encounter a problem that it couldn’t handle.”
AppSense key benefits for healthcare IT:
- Improving clinician experience and productivity and enabling greater patient care
- Meeting regulatory compliance demands and protecting patient privacy
- Ensuring availability of mission-critical clinician desktops and applications
