On behalf of everyone from the Application Manager team, I am very pleased to announce the release of Application Manager Feature Release 6 (FR6). This is a release that the team and I are very proud of and boasts a number of new features and enhancements to existing functionality that will ease configuration creation, management and deployment.
From a development point of view, the theme has very much been about simplicity and usability, having said that, not at a cost to quality. Application Manager has always been a solid, stable product and this release is no exception, making sure that quality is as high as possible has been at the heart of everything the team has done.
Download it from MyAppSense and try for yourself; here are some of the enhancements that are available in this release:
- User Rights Management Application Access Control linking
User Rights Management is sometimes used to elevate items that are prohibited by Application Manager’s access control rules. In previous releases of Application Manager you needed to add the item to both the User Rights Management and Accessible Items lists. In AM8 FR6, we have simplified configuration management by providing a new capability to eliminate the need specify the application in the two separate areas of the configuration.
This is particularly important in brownfield environments as part of a customer’s adoption of user rights management and application access control, where applications may have been legitimately introduced under the context of the local user account, which would normally be blocked from executing under the trusted ownership rule. By simply selecting the new option to allow the items that are being elevated to execute, those items will be automatically run, negating the need to configure twice, dramatically reducing configuration creation time and simplifying ongoing administration and management of the configuration.
- Metadata Support
Application Manager has provided the ability to control Application usage, Application Rights and Application Network Access for a wide variety of industries by using file names or digital finger. Application Manager AM 8 FR6 provides a new facility to use application metadata to ascertain the validity of files or folders. Data such as vendor name and version number can now be used to ensure that a selected file or application meets certain criteria before it can be run, elevated or allowed to access certain network resources.
- Endpoint Merging
Application Manager, like other product contained within the DesktopNow suite of solutions, now supports the merging of multiple configurations on the endpoint, allowing IT to quickly deploy a new, updated or changed configuration to a required group of users or a domain. Organizations can now make quick changes and/or create new configurations in isolation and deliver these to an end point where the AM agent will process the new configuration and merge it with any existing configurations.
- Product Patching
Something else that is consistent between the DesktopNow products is the ability to seamlessly patch our products with MSP based service packs rather than full MSI packages. This will minimize the need for rebooting when applying a needed fix and make rolling out service a far easier process.

Many thanks to the customers who have helped shape and validate this release, and the development teams for making it happen.
